Why You Should Choose Multi-Platform Software

In the past, the mention of the word software almost always referred to desktop applications. Nowadays, a more popular term is in use: apps. This word is short for applications, which is a set of programs that run under an operating system. It usually means mobile applications, but it can be used in reference to software used on desktops, laptops, tablet computers, smartphones, and other smart devices.

This post does not intend to explore the differences between software, apps, and programs. It only bears mentioning these terms in light of the increasingly multi-platform nature of applications at present. Of note, it’s becoming increasingly advantageous to get software that can be used on different platforms at the same time. In the case of sports club membership software, for example, it would be preferable to use something you can use on your desktop or laptop computer as well as on your mobile devices.

Mobility

The main benefit of multi-platform software is the ability to use it anytime and anywhere conveniently. You no longer have to worry about taking your desktop computer with you because you can use the same application through its mobile version with synchronised data. You can do your business on the go through your phone or tablet as long as you have an internet connection. For instance, if you want to check and update the schedules for your sports club, you can just launch the app on your phone and do what you need to do.

One important feature of the mobility advantage that needs emphasising though is synchronicity. This refers to the automatic updating of data and configuration changes in the application being used. To achieve real mobility, the app you are using across different platforms should be synchronised. Some applications can be used on desktops and smartphones, but they are not necessarily designed for synchronisation, so you will have different sets of data and configurations instead of simply signing in to an account and accessing the same data and settings.

Reduced cost and better efficiency

A synched multi-platform application results in a cost reduction as it entails less expenditure for software used in a business. At the same time, it boosts efficiency since the training for the software use is minimised. As mentioned, there’s also the advantage of mobility. It’s easier to do things when you are not bound by time and location. A unified software platform benefits a company or organisation in many ways. It simplifies processes and ensures consistency. It creates a more predictable system, which is a boon for management.

In almost all cases, being able to use a synched software system across different platforms is beneficial. It should even become the standard. You just need to make sure that it is adequately secure. There are apps that are built to work on different platforms but have security issues. This is particularly true for freeware or ad-supported applications. If you want the best multi-platform app without the security compromises, you may need to shell out some money for it.
